World History II (C1) - C Block

Due Monday:  Read pages 540-543 and complete the "Taking Notes" chart from page 540 (with an emphasis on Louis XIV);  Read "Louis XIV's Description of Kingship" and "A Day in the Life of the Sun King" and answer the following questions:
1.  List 5-7 pieces of advice that Louis tells his son about being a king.  What does he think is best, overall, about being a king?

2.  After reading "Keeping up Appearances" and "Power Games" in "A Day in the Life...", explain how those ideas connect and/or influence the daily schedule that Louis XIV kept.

World History II (H) - D / F Blocks

Due Friday (D Block):  Read "Variations on the Main Theme" and answer the following questions:

1. Explain the role that “patriotism” played in contributing to the age of absolute governments.

2. How does the author tie ancient Roman law to the rise of strong absolute governments?

3. Explain why the author sees the antagonism between the bourgeois and noble classes as being “the principal factor in the development of absolute monarchies”.

If you are not able to answer the questions specificially, please write down what difficulties you had with the reading and what you were able to get from it.

Due Monday (F Block):  Read pages 484-487 and 535-538 in your textbook and answer the following 2 questions:
1.  Compare and contrast the economic systems of "mercantilism" and "capitalism" as it is explained in the text.
2.  Explain the strengths and weaknesses of Spanish rule in the 16th century (make sure to address the cultural growth that Spain experienced during the century).
