Due Thursday - Read pages 155 - 163 (Parts II & III), 168 - 171 ("There were two main motives to Cromwell's objection..." to the end of the article); both additional sheets about England during the Restoration and after the "Glorious Revolution"; prepare for a quiz with the following focus questions:


1. 154-157 - How did the political debate between Charles I and Parliament evolve?

2. 157-162 - What are the financial and social issues that pushed England towards Civil War in the 1640s?

3. 168-171 - What were the distinguishing characteristics of Cromwell's rule and the English Civil War?

4. Page about Restoration - How did the English monarchy reassert itself under Charles II and James II and how why was it eventually brought down?

5. Pages about Glorious Revolution's aftermath - How were the Irish controlled by England by the early 18th century? How did English Parliament show traits of Absolute rule by 1710?

The last sentence on the Restoration page is "It is because we had a preserving revolution in the 17th century that we have not had a destroying revolution in the 19th." (this will be an important idea to remember for the first semester)

Please do all of the readings, but the quiz will only be drawn from focus questions #2, #3, #5
