Due Thursday:  Read Chapter 18.1 and answer the 3 "Reading Focus" questions on the top of pg. 535.

World History II (H) - D / F Blocks

Due Thursday (D Block): Read pg. 1 and the first column of pg. 2 (stop after the phrase "ornanmental expression" from "The New Monarchy Thesis" and answer, to the best of your understanding, the following two questions:

1. What was the relationship between the Church and the State, as described on page 1?
2. What are some of the defining characteristics of "the State" after it's relationship with the Church ends?

Also, write down any words, phrases or ideas that are totally unfamiliar to you from this part of the reading.

If you are unable to find, or provide answers, for the two questions, please write down what you found difficult about the reading and what you were able to get from it.

Due Thursday (F Block):

Read "Variations on the Main Theme" and answer the following questions:
1. Explain the role that “patriotism” played in contributing to the age of absolute governments.
2. How does the author tie ancient Roman law to the rise of strong absolute governments?
3. Explain why the author sees the antagonism between the bourgeois and noble classes as being “the principal factor in the development of absolute monarchies”.

If you are not able to answer the questions specificially, please write down what difficulties you had with the reading and what you were able to get from it.
