Due Tuesday: Read the Strong and Mahan excerpts and be familiar with their arguments for why they saw a need for American expansion. Read pages 690-707 - Be familiar with the influence of the 4 "P's" on American expansionism (Profits, Patriotism, Piety, Politics) and the causes and effects of the Spanish-American and Filipino-American Wars. As always, do these things in preparation for a quiz.
We will be reading the rest of the chapter for Wednesday and there will be a somewhat dense, but highly interesting and informative, 30-page reading for Friday. If you would like to pick up the longer reading before class on Tuesday in order to budget your time, it will be available on Monday.
