World History II (C1) - C Block

Due Monday:  Read the excerpt from Things Fall Apart.  To set up the excerpt, Okonkwo and the men of Umofia are meeting to discuss how to address the growing influence of Europeans in their village.  Okika and Okonkwo are village leaders who would like to see action against the Europeans.  Egonwanne is a village leader who would convince the men that it is useless to fight.  Okonkwo is especially angry because Europeans came into the village while he was away in exile.  When he returned, he expected that he was going to be the leader of the tribe.

After reading the excerpt, answer the following questions:
1.  Explain how the negative attitudes about Egonwanne are expressed. 
2.  What are Okika's main arguments for fighting?
3.  Explain what happened when Okonkwo confronted the messenger.  Why do you think the people in the crowd reacted the way they did?
4.  Write a brief dialogue between Okonkwo and another villager, or a brief monologue by Okonkwo reacting to the crowd's response to his confrontation with the messenger.
