World History II(H) - (A / G Blocks)

Read the section from History of the Modern World titled "The Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union" (pp. 697 - 719). There will be an open note quiz (G Block - Friday 4/3; A Block - Monday 4/6). You should focus on the conditions that led to discontent in Russia, the examples of discontent before WWI, the immediate and long-term effects of "Bloody Sunday", the effects of the two revolutions in 1917 and the problems in Russia after the 2nd revolution.

Answers to the following questions will be due Friday, April 3 for both classes. The sheet with the 4 brief readings is available in my classroom.

Lenin’s Testament
1. How concerned does Lenin seem about Josef Stalin possibly rising to the position of Secretary-General? Why might this letter not have had the impact that Lenin hoped?

Lenin on the Nature of the State
2. How does Lenin believe that “freedom” can be achieved in a Communist State?

Stalin: How to deal with opposition (title partially obscured)
3. What is the metaphor Stalin uses to describe the Communist Party? Why does he choose this metaphor? How does he use it to explain any possible changes in party membership?

Stalin on the Role of the Party
4. How does Stalin see the relationship between the proletariat and the Party? How is this similar and different to Lenin’s views on the “nature of the State”?

pp. 775-777 in textbook – Explain Stalin’s plan for the Russian economy, how it was implemented and how successful it was.
