Complete the “Reconstructing a Nation” hand-out and read
Abraham Lincoln’s “Second Inaugural Address” and answer the following questions
in complete sentences:
- In the second paragraph (starts with “On the occasion…”), what role does Lincoln say both sides play in the start of the war? Which side does he say started the war (or does he say one side started the war)? How can you tell?
- What does Lincoln say, truly, was the reason for the start of the war?
- In the fourth paragraph, (“Neither party…”), how does Lincoln view both sides – as more similar or different? How can you tell?
- In the fifth paragraph, what does Lincoln say about slavery as a sin, and the people of the United States having to pay for that sin?
- Based on the ideas in the final paragraph (“With malice towards…”), what do you think a post-war America might have looked like under Lincoln’s leadership?
