Homework - 9/10

For Thursday:  Read "The Great Debate over Indian Policy" and consider the following focus questions as you read:

1.  How and why did the Spanish struggle with the dual motivation of "Conquest and Conversion?"
2.  How did de las Casas's role in supporting the Spanish colonial policy change over time?
3.  How did the arguments between de las Casas and Sepulveda translate into Spain's later colonial policies?

These are not questions that you have to write out answers to - you should just use them to guide your reading, as they address the most relevant information (for this class).

You should have also picked up copies of terms and guiding questions for the first 5 chapters of the book.  You can use these to review what you have read over the summer and fill in any gaps your notes might have.
