Due Thursday:  The packet includes a description the Chinese govenrment, according to British Trade Ambassador Lord Macartney and two responses (in the form of imperial edicts) from Chinese Emperor Qianlong regarding Lord Macartney's requests to alter the trade relationship between England and China, providing more favorable terms for England than for other European nations.  Read the bracketed excerpts from the packet and answer the following questions.
(Honors - do all of the excerpts;  C1 - do 3 of the 5 excerpts)

Excerpt 1 (p. 101) - What happened to China after the conquest of the Tartars (a broad reference to the Manchus)?

Excerpt 2 (mid-102 - 103) - What does Macartney see as the present situation with the Chinese government?  What does he think are the possibilities if the current situation were "dislocated or dismembered"?

Excerpt 3 (All of "The First Edict" - 104-106) - What problems does Emperor Qianlong see with the presence of foreign traders in China?  the request of Macartney to change England's status in comparison to other European countries?
How does the Emperor view China's power and culture in relationship to that of England and the rest of Europe?

Excerpt 4 (106 - top of 107) - How does the Emperor view England? trade relations between China & Europe?

Excerpt 5 (p. 109) - How does the Emperor present how he thinks the King of England should take his proposal and what China's response would be if the King of England does not abide by the proposals that Qianlong has laid out?
