Essay – Due Wednesday, March 3 (both classes)
Compare and contrast the changes in both domestic policy and foreign relations experienced in China and Japan as a result of Western Intervention between 1842 – 1911. Consider the causes and effects of the changes, as well as the changes themselves. You should also reflect on the changing nature of the relationship between the two countries. Include a thesis in your response.
Note: Do not repeat all of the terms of treaties or the details of battles. I am more interested in seeing how you understand the bigger picture effects of the European intervention on the two countries. For example, I do not need to know all of the details of the Treaty of Shiminoseki or the Triple Intervention, but rather how the Chinese and Japanese reacted to them and how it effected changes in their governments or approach to foreign powers.
